How to Keep a Fountain Pen Clean

A clean fountain pen is reliable, free from ink mess, and provides a remarkable writing experience. Fountain pens are available from leading suppliers both online and offline. For example, you can buy luxury fountain pens from Notedian or from e-commerce websites such as e-Bay.

Whether you use a traditional version of a fountain pen or a modern version of the pen with an ink cartridge that you can replace, having a clean fountain pen has its share of benefits. For example, it increases the efficiency of the pen, clears it from debris and dry ink that can clog the feed area and the nib, and makes the pen stylish.

Therefore, after obtaining your fountain from Notedian, how do you keep it clean to enable you to get the best service from it? The following tips can help you achieve this goal:

Simple cleaning

When a fountain pen remains dormant for some time, the ink dries up in the feed area and on the nib. To clear the clog after a short period of dormancy, you can just run a gush of cool water over the feed section and the nib. The water pressure should be able to loosen the dried ink.

After cleaning all the ink that clog the nib and the feed area, use a sheet of clean paper towel to dry the components. In addition, fountain pen nibs are delicate and can break easily if you don’t handle them well, although you can find a replacement from reliable suppliers as Notedian.

Each time you deal with fountain pen tips and other components, you should be careful enough not to apply too much force on the delicate parts. If the pen is not clean after running cool water over it, you can proceed to a more advanced level of cleaning.

Deep cleaning

In deep cleaning method, you need the following materials for preparation:

·         A small rubber syringe

·         A clean space near kitchen sink  or a laundry tap

·         A roll of soft paper towel

·         A small container filled  halfway with water

Before you begin the cleaning procedure, you need to disassemble the fountain and put the components apart. Remove the cap, barrel, feed section and the nib, ink cartridge, or a piston converter.

Step 1

Hold the feed area and the nib with the tip facing down and run a strong gush of cool water over it. Never use hot water and be careful when handling the nib part.

Step 2

Place the feed area and the nib section in the container filled halfway with water. Swish it around in the water and observe the color. If the water remains clean, it shows the pen is already clean. If the ink shows some ink residue, continue soaking the components for additional ten or fifteen minutes.

Step 3

Repeat the last process until the water is clean. Alternatively, you can use the rubber syringe to flush water through the components in both directions.

Step 4

Use a sheet of paper towel to dry the components, making sure not to break the nib or any other component. Reassemble the pen and continue writing!
